Man sentenced to life in jail for Irish tourist's murder

A court in Goa has sentenced a 31-year-old local resident to rigorous life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Irish-British national Danielle McLaughin in 2017. The accused, Vikat Bhagat, was found guilty of raping and murdering the 28-year-old tourist, whose body was found in a forested area in Canacona village of South Goa on March 14, 2017. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for the rape and murder and Rs 10,000 for the destruction of evidence.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has assured bar leaders that he will consider their demand for withdrawal of the collegium's recommendation to transfer Delhi High Court's Justice Yashwant Varma. The decision came after representatives of six bar associations of different high courts met with the CJI and other collegium members. The bar associations are protesting the proposed repatriation of Justice Varma to his parent high court, alleging that the evidence in a fire incident at his residence was tampered with. The bar associations have also raised concerns about the non-registration of an FIR in the incident.

The vital organs from the body of Scarlett Eden Keeling, whose body was flown to the United Kingdom, were found missing during the third autopsy, the lawyer representing Fiona Mackeown has confirmed.The Coroner court in Devonshire, UK during the second level post-mortem had found that vital body parts like stomach, kidneys and uterus are missing.Scarlett's bruised corpse was found at Anjuna beach on February 18.
